Feb. 7, 1887 Condolence Letter From Edward Lynch in Marlboro, MA

February 21, 2018

Edward Lynch wrote a condolence letter to John F. Armstrong on February 7, 1887, eighteen days after the death of Sarah McAndrew Armstrong. Looking at the postmarks on the envelope, Lynch mailed the letter in Marlboro, Massachusetts on February 7th, and it arrived in Augusta on February 10th.

This letter was difficult to research because the signature was hard to read. It looked like “Eamond Lyndle”. However, Marie recently found a newspaper article from the 20 May 1886 edition of the Boston Herald about a Land League meeting in Marlboro, MA. It was led by Edward Lynch.

The Irish Land League of America was dissolved in 1883 and replaced by the Irish National League of America (INLA). John F. Armstrong was a founding member of the INLA. Edward Lynch’s involvement in the INLA will have to be researched further.

Lynch and JF may also have known each other through the Clan na Gael, the secret Irish fraternal organization. In the letter, he addressed JF as “Bro. Armstrong” and closed the letter with “Yours Fraternally, Edward Lynch”.

Please note that Marie Van Sant Hudson contributed research for this post.
