The Children of Dick and May Armstrong Casey
July 21, 2014
Mary Ellen “May” Armstrong Casey was the oldest child and only daughter of John Francis and Sarah McAndrew Armstrong. In 1892, she married William Celestin “Dick” Casey at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Augusta, Georgia.
May and Dick had four children: Frances “Frankie” Armstrong Casey (1893-1988), Joseph “Bubba” Armstrong Casey (1894-1952), Sarah Theresa Casey Van Sant (1895-1992), and Gerald William Casey (1896-1951).
The above photograph of the Casey children was probably taken in 1896, when Sarah (middle) was about a year old. Frankie (left) would have been about three and Bubba (right) two. The photograph below was likely taken around 1897, when Gerald (on floor) was around one. Frankie (left) would have been about four, Sarah (middle) two, and Bubba (right) three.
Frankie, John Frances Armstrong’s oldest grandchild, was seven months old when he died on November 9th, 1893. Throughout her life, she shared her mother’s photographs and stories of JF with her nieces and nephews and their children as a way to honor her grandfather and keep his memory alive.
