Jan. 20, 1887 Condolence Letter from Augusta, GA Businessman Ker Boyce

Originally from Charleston, South Carolina, Ker Boyce (1833-1891) was a businessman in Augusta, who served as an officer in the Georgia Twelfth Battalion of the Confederate Army. After the Civil War, he was active in the Democratic Party and, in the mid-1880s, served as Augusta’s postmaster. He and his wife, Mary Jane McGran Boyce (1835-1899), are buried in Magnolia Cemetery.

Boyce sent this condolence letter, dated January 20, 1887, to John F. Armstrong upon the death of his wife, Sarah McAndrew Armstrong. Sarah had died earlier that morning.

Boyce’s letter reads:

John F. Armstrong Esq Augusta Ga

Dear John

I have just heard of your great grief and I send you a simple [“]pressure of the hand”.
